All Saints Estate

All Saints Estate is a historic fortified wine and table wine producer in the Rutherglen region of northeast Victoria, Australia, operating continuously since 1864 making it one of the country's oldest operating wineries. The estate is best known for its fortified wines — Muscat and Topaque (formerly Tokay/Muscadelle) — produced under the Rutherglen Classification system, which uses a tiered nomenclature (Rutherglen, Classic, Grand, Rare) reflecting the average age and complexity of the solera-aged material. At auction, the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon is the primary wine appearing, averaging $124 per bottle with 106 lots, which is unusual given that Rutherglen's international reputation rests entirely on fortified wines rather than table wine. This suggests the auction lots may include older Cabernet vintages from the 1970s–1990s when Australian Cabernet from warm regions attracted collector interest. The price range of $1–$242 reflects the heterogeneity of these lots. The estate's fortified wines — particularly Grand and Rare Muscat — are infrequently traded at auction but command serious prices when they appear, given the irreplaceable old solera stocks. All Saints was purchased by Peter Brown in 1992 and revitalized; the estate also operates the 1920s-era castle winery as a tourist destination.

All Saints Estate has operated continuously since 1864, making it one of Australia's oldest wineries and one of only a handful of Rutherglen producers with pre-Federation history.
Rutherglen Muscat and Topaque are produced under a four-tier classification system (Rutherglen, Classic, Grand, Rare) based on average solera age; the Rare tier, containing material averaging over 20 years, is the most valuable.
At auction, All Saints Cabernet Sauvignon averages $124 per bottle — surprisingly high for a region not known for table wine — reflecting older vintages from the 1970s–1990s when warm-climate Australian Cabernet attracted serious collector interest.
The estate's castle winery, built in the 1880s from locally quarried stone, is heritage-listed and serves as both a working production facility and one of Victoria's most photographed winery destinations.

In the Glass

All Saints' fortified Rutherglen Muscat delivers extraordinary complexity: raisin, Christmas cake, roasted coffee, dark toffee, and orange peel with a viscous, unctuous texture and fresh acid balance from the solera system. Grand and Rare tiers add rancio, aged spirit, and extraordinary length. The Cabernet Sauvignon from older vintages shows warm-climate ripeness: blackberry jam, chocolate, and mint with soft tannins typical of Rutherglen's continental heat.
