Bhilar

Bodegas y Viñedos Bhilar is a small estate in the Rioja Alavesa subzone of Rioja, focused on single-parcel wines from old-vine Tempranillo (and some Graciano) planted on the steep limestone slopes and clay soils of the Sierra Cantabria foothills near the village of Laguardia. The estate was founded by Dani García in the early 2000s with an ambition to produce site-specific Rioja from the 'Phinca' (local spelling) series of individual vineyard wines. At auction, the portfolio centers on the DSG Phinca series: Lali ($82), Abejera ($72), Phincas (a blend, $128), and Phinca Encanto Rufete ($60). The 2010 vintage appears consistently as the top mark across all cuvées — an excellent year for Rioja Alavesa structure and freshness. The Phincas cuvée at $128 is the highest-priced, representing the best-parcel selection. Bhilar's approach — single-parcel old-vine Tempranillo on limestone with minimal intervention winemaking — aligns with the new wave of Rioja producers who explicitly reject the traditional approach of multi-vineyard blending and American oak aging. The estate has attracted critical attention from Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate's Iberian specialist) for the Phinca wines' precision and terroir expression.

Bhilar produces exclusively from named single parcels ('Phincas') of old-vine Tempranillo in Rioja Alavesa — a deliberate contrast to traditional Rioja's multi-vineyard blending model.
The 2010 vintage appears as the top mark across all four Bhilar cuvées — a year consistently cited as one of the finest recent vintages for structured, mineral Rioja Alavesa from limestone-clay soils.
DSG Phincas, the estate's top selection, averages $128 at auction — the highest price in the portfolio — as a blend of the finest parcels in exceptional vintages.
Bhilar's minimal-intervention winemaking, including use of French oak rather than American oak and early picking for acidity, reflects the 'new wave' Rioja philosophy that has attracted significant critical attention since the 2010s.

In the Glass

Rioja Alavesa Tempranillo on limestone with a modern, site-specific character: black cherry, dried plum, dried rose, and subtle spice with a fine-grained tannic grip from calcareous soils and firm natural acidity. The style is more mineral and less oaky than traditional Rioja — French oak gives cedar and spice rather than American oak's vanilla and coconut. The Phinca single-parcels show meaningful within-appellation terroir differentiation. All wines reward 5–12 years of cellaring.
