Cayuse

Cayuse Vineyards was established in 1997 by Christophe Baron in Walla Walla, Washington, after he discovered the region's distinctive cobblestone (galets roulés) soils reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Grenache terroir. The estate focuses exclusively on estate fruit, primarily Syrah, from approximately 25 acres of certified biodynamic vineyards including Armada, Cailloux, Camaspelo, and En Chamberlin — each producing a single-vineyard Syrah. Across 1,540 auction lots averaging $158, Cayuse has established the premium benchmark for Washington State Syrah. The Bionic Frog Syrah, from the En Chamberlin vineyard's most selected barrels, is the most prestigious offering; Armada and Cailloux trade between $150–$250 per bottle. Widowmaker Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the En Chamberlin vineyard, is the estate's principal Bordeaux variety. Cayuse's mailing list release system — allocation-only with waitlists — means virtually all bottles eventually reach secondary market, providing consistent auction liquidity. Biodynamic certification (Demeter) and exceptionally low yields (typically under 1 ton per acre) create the concentration that scores from Parker (who awarded multiple perfect scores) and Jeb Dunnuck demand. Top vintages are 2003, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016. Christophe Baron's Horsepower Vineyards label, producing ungrafted-vine Syrah and Grenache, trades at even higher premiums.

Parker awarded Cayuse's En Chamberlin Syrah a perfect 100 points for the 2003 vintage, one of the first Washington State wines to receive that score; the 2003 now trades above $400 per bottle at auction.
All Cayuse vineyards are certified biodynamic by Demeter; vineyard yields average below 1 ton per acre, producing wines of extraordinary concentration from cobblestone soils that drain heat and radiate warmth at night.
The Bionic Frog Syrah, selected from En Chamberlin's finest barrels, is produced in quantities below 200 cases annually; allocation-only release means the secondary market is the only source for most buyers.
Baron established Horsepower Vineyards in 2010 as a separate label for ungrafted vine fruit; those wines command premiums above $500 per bottle at auction, reflecting the rarity of pre-phylloxera-style propagation in Washington State.

In the Glass

Cayuse Syrah is the Northern Rhône transplanted to basalt and cobblestone: violets, crushed black and white pepper, olive tapenade, smoked meat, and dark berry on the nose. The palate is full-bodied but with a savouriness and Northern Rhône-like iron and mineral quality rare in New World Syrah. Tannins are firm and fine-grained. Bionic Frog adds a leathery, feral dimension from old vine concentration. All wines benefit from at least 5–10 years of cellaring.
