Chateau de Fonsalette

Château de Fonsalette is a Côtes du Rhône estate owned by the Reynaud family — the same family that controls the legendary Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape — farmed as what many collectors consider a satellite or second wine of Rayas, though officially classified as a Côtes du Rhône. Fonsalette produces three wines: a Grenache-dominant Rouge, a pure Syrah, and a white Clairette Blanc. The Syrah is the estate's most prestigious and sought-after wine, averaging $544 across 55 lots with the 1989 vintage most traded — an extraordinary value ratio given that this is technically a humble Côtes du Rhône designation. The Rouge averages $361 across 85 lots with the 1990 vintage most represented. The Blanc averages $227. Auction prices reach $2,629. The overall average of $423 across 147 lots far exceeds most Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers — a direct result of the Rayas connection, extreme production scarcity (the estate makes only a few thousand cases), and the idiosyncratic Reynaud family style: low yields, unfiltered, age-requiring wines of extraordinary complexity. Fonsalette is one of the most compelling arguments that appellation status is irrelevant to wine quality when great terroir and uncompromising viticulture intersect.

Château de Fonsalette is owned by the Reynaud family of Château Rayas and produces wines on the same philosophical and quality level as its Châteauneuf-du-Pape sibling, despite the Côtes du Rhône classification.
The Fonsalette Syrah averages $544 per bottle across 55 lots — higher than most Châteauneuf-du-Pape produced by famous estates — with the 1989 vintage the most actively traded.
Auction prices reach $2,629 per bottle and the portfolio averages $423 across 147 lots, extraordinary numbers for a Côtes du Rhône appellation wine, driven by Rayas' cult following.
Total production is only a few thousand cases annually across all three cuvées, with wines released under the understated Reynaud label and allocated to a narrow distribution network.

In the Glass

Château de Fonsalette's wines are quintessentially Reynaud: pure, unmanipulated, and profoundly site-expressive. The Grenache Rouge delivers iron-edged raspberry, kirsch, earth, and garrigue with remarkable freshness and longevity. The Syrah is dense and mineral: smoked meat, blueberry, iron, and leather. The Clairette Blanc is oxidatively rich and complex. All wines require 10–20 years from top vintages and reward extraordinary patience.
