Chateau Meyney

Chateau Meyney is a Cru Bourgeois Superieur estate in Saint-Estephe occupying 51 hectares of well-drained gravel and clay soils on the northern bank of the Gironde, adjacent to the classified growths of the Medoc. Originally a 17th-century Carmelite priory — a heritage reflected in its second label, Prieur de Meyney — the property was acquired by the Cordier négociant family in 1920 and later passed to Credit Agricole's Grands Chais group. The vineyard is planted to approximately 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, producing structured, classically Saint-Estephe wines with the appellation's signature firm tannins and long aging potential. Meyney has consistently punched above its Cru Bourgeois classification: older vintages from the 1980s and early 1990s — particularly 1982, 1986, and 1989 — are among the most coveted bottles at auction, with the 1989 standing as the most sought-after vintage across the estate's 293 auction lots. At auction, the main label averages $87 per bottle across 293 lots, with peak prices reaching $2,868 for exceptional library vintages in large format. The price floor of $21 reflects younger vintages and mixed lots, while the broad range underscores Meyney's value positioning relative to classified growths with comparable aging potential.

Chateau Meyney occupies 51 hectares in Saint-Estephe planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, and its 17th-century origins as a Carmelite priory are commemorated in the second label, Prieur de Meyney.
The 1989 is the most traded vintage at auction and commands the highest premiums; library bottles from 1982 and 1986 have achieved prices exceeding $2,868 per bottle, an extraordinary multiple over the $87 portfolio average.
Despite its Cru Bourgeois Superieur classification, Meyney's structured, age-worthy style regularly outperforms classified growths in blind tastings of Medoc older vintages, making it a recognized value benchmark for collectors.
The estate produces roughly 200,000 bottles annually, with 305 lots traded at auction spanning a $21–$2,868 price range that reflects both current-release value and rare library bottle demand.

In the Glass

Classic Saint-Estephe in structure: blackcurrant, cigar box, and iron-inflected earth on the nose, with firm, grippy Cabernet-driven tannins and a backbone of acidity that rewards decade-long cellaring. Merlot contributes roundness and dark plum flesh in the mid-palate, while Petit Verdot adds spice and depth. Older vintages develop leather, tobacco, and graphite complexity. The style is austere in youth, generous with age.
