France · Wine Auction Prices

Bordeaux is the world's largest fine wine region by auction volume, a 120,000-hectare mosaic of gravel ridges, limestone plateaux, and river-deposited alluvial soils straddling the Gironde estuary. The Left Bank — Médoc and Graves — is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon thriving on deep, well-drained gravel, giving wines the backbone for decades of cellaring. The Right Bank — Saint-Émilion, Pomerol — shifts to clay and limestone, where Merlot and Cabernet Franc produce rounder, earlier-drinking styles. Château Pétrus, on a mere 11.4 hectares of blue clay in Pomerol, routinely surpasses Premier Cru Médocs in price, while the tiny production of Le Pin fetches among the highest per-bottle prices of any wine in the world. The 1855 Classification remains the commercial backbone of the Médoc market: the five First Growths — Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, and Haut-Brion — command a consistent premium. The Bordeaux en primeur system, where wines are sold as futures before bottling, makes auction secondary markets critical for price discovery. Vintages 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2022 represent the modern canon of great years, with 2009 and 2010 in particular representing back-to-back classics that defined a generation of collectors.

Bordeaux
01

Bordeaux is the world's most-traded fine wine region at auction, with the five 1855 First Growths — Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, and Haut-Brion — anchoring the global collectibles market.

02

The Left Bank's deep Günzian gravel ridges give Cabernet Sauvignon the drainage and heat retention to ripen fully; Pomerol's blue clay gives Merlot unparalleled body and concentration.

03

Château Pétrus farms just 11.4 hectares in Pomerol with no official classification, yet routinely commands prices exceeding First Growths — proving appellation status is not the only driver of value.

04

The en primeur futures system means a Bordeaux vintage is priced twice: first as barrel samples sold in the spring after harvest, then again when bottles appear on the auction secondary market two or more years later.

In the Glass

Left Bank Bordeaux — Médoc, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux — is Cabernet-driven: blackcurrant, cigar box, graphite, and cedar, building firm tannins that soften over 10–20 years toward leather and dried fruit. Right Bank Bordeaux leans Merlot: plum, chocolate, and truffle with a velvety texture accessible earlier. White Bordeaux from Pessac-Léognan blends Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon into a waxy, lanolin-rich style with citrus and toasted oak, capable of aging 15–25 years.
