Petrus

Pétrus is an approximately 11.4-hectare estate in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, distinguished by its extraordinary plateau of blue clay over an iron-rich crasse de fer subsoil that retains heat and moisture in a way that allows near-complete Merlot maturity even in challenging vintages. The estate has been managed by the Moueix family since 1947, with Jean-Pierre Moueix building its global reputation from the 1960s onward. Production is almost entirely Merlot — typically 90–100% — making it the most prominent Merlot-dominant wine in the world. Pétrus carries no official classification under the Pomerol system (the appellation has none), but its market position consistently exceeds classified Médoc First Growths. Auction data demonstrates exceptional pricing: 2,138 lots all representing the single wine 'Pétrus, Pomerol' at a $3,054 average, with 1989 as the most actively traded vintage and peak prices reaching $45,410 per lot. The $770 floor reflects market clearing for lesser vintages or damaged labels — even modest Pétrus commands meaningful secondary value. Major auction houses devote dedicated sections to Pétrus, with three- and six-bottle lots of mature vintages (1982, 1989, 1990, 2000, 2012) frequently achieving five-figure totals. Annual production of approximately 2,500–3,000 cases sustains collector scarcity. The 2012 classification that elevated Angélus and Pavie to the same Premier Grand Cru Classé A tier as Ausone and Cheval Blanc does not affect Pétrus, which remains outside Saint-Émilion's system entirely.

Pétrus averages $3,054 per lot across 2,138 auction appearances — the highest average by any producer in this dataset, with peak prices reaching $45,410 for large-format mature vintages.
The 1989 vintage is the most actively traded, with the 1982, 1990, and 2000 considered the benchmark modern-era bottles regularly achieving $5,000–$15,000 per lot.
At approximately 11.4 hectares and 2,500–3,000 cases per vintage, production is limited enough that acquiring Pétrus on the primary market requires direct Moueix negociant relationships.
The Pomerol blue clay plateau over crasse de fer subsoil allows near-complete Merlot maturity, enabling the estate to produce exceptional wine even in vintages difficult for other Bordeaux estates.

In the Glass

Pétrus Merlot delivers an opulent, expansive palate of ripe black cherry, plum preserve, truffle, chocolate, and iron-tinged earth — the blue clay terroir imposing a mineral weight rare in any Bordeaux appellation. Unlike the firmness of left-bank Cabernet, Pétrus's tannins are plush and enveloping even in youth, yet the wine requires 15–25 years to reveal its full complexity and depth. Older vintages develop profound secondary characteristics of cigar box, coffee, dried violet, and warm earth.
