Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost and most rustically structured of the four great Haut-Médoc communes, where heavier clay soils moderate the drainage that pure gravel provides to the south, producing wines of greater body, higher acidity, and firmer tannins. The commune was historically undervalued at auction — only two Second Growths (Cos d'Estournel and Montrose) received high classification in 1855 — but sustained quality improvements since the 1990s have brought Saint-Estèphe wines to greater collector attention. Cos d'Estournel, with its dramatic pagoda-topped chai, produces one of Bordeaux's most distinctive and age-worthy wines, blending Cabernet Sauvignon and a higher proportion of Merlot than most Left Bank estates. Montrose spent decades in the shadow of neighbouring Pauillac but has emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed Bordeaux estates since the 2009 vintage. Calon-Ségur, with its famous heart label, produces one of the most romantic Bordeaux stories and has seen significant quality gains under recent ownership. Haut-Marbuzet and Lafon-Rochet represent the secondary tier with strong value propositions.

01

Saint-Estèphe's heavier clay content — higher than any other major Haut-Médoc commune — gives its wines a distinctive weight and firmness that requires longer ageing but rewards patience with exceptional complexity.

02

Cos d'Estournel's chai features Indian-inspired pagodas commissioned by owner Louis Gaspard d'Estournel in the 19th century after trading wine with the Maharajas of India — the most architecturally striking building in the Médoc.

03

Calon-Ségur's heart label commemorates the 18th-century owner Marquis de Ségur's declaration that 'I make wine at Latour and Lafite, but my heart is at Calon' — making it one of the most widely collected Bordeaux labels in Asia.

04

Montrose produced arguably the greatest Bordeaux of 2009 (alongside Pétrus) according to multiple critic assessments — a watershed moment that repositioned the estate at the very top of the Saint-Estèphe market.

In the Glass

Saint-Estèphe is more austere and tannic than its neighbours: blackcurrant, dark plum, and iron on the nose, with a firm, chewy tannic structure that gives the wines their distinctive backbone. Young Saint-Estèphe can be forbidding; with 10–20 years the wines reveal extraordinary depth, earthiness, and complexity. Cos d'Estournel is more flamboyant and exotic; Montrose is structured and classic; Calon-Ségur is more approachable and perfumed.
