About Sauternes
Sauternes is a sweet white wine from the Graves district of Bordeaux. It is made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes shrivelled by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates their sugar and flavour. The local climate makes noble rot unusually common, but harvests still vary widely from year to year. Château d'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur, is the best known; Rieussec is among the First Growths. Barsac lies within the area and may use either name. Sweet wine production here dates to the 17th century, when Dutch traders took an interest. Neighbouring areas such as Cérons, Loupiac and Cadillac make similar but lighter wines.
