Chateau Suduiraut

Chateau Suduiraut is a Premier Cru Classé estate in Sauternes, situated immediately adjacent to Château d'Yquem in the commune of Preignac. The estate's 92 hectares of vineyards, planted predominantly with Sémillon (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc (10%), benefit from the Ciron river's morning mists that encourage Botrytis cinerea. Ownership passed to AXA Millésimes in 1992, which modernised the cellar and stabilised quality. The flagship Château Suduiraut Premier Cru Classé is the dominant auction lot with 716 sales averaging $112 per bottle, with prices reaching $1,599 for exceptional vintages. The 2001 is the estate's benchmark year, offering a decade-defining botrytis expression with extraordinary concentration; 2009 and 1989 are also highly regarded. Second wine Castelnau de Suduiraut trades notably higher in average terms ($176) owing to selective lot composition, typically drawing from declassified barrels of the grand vin. At auction the estate's 1,796 lots average $125 per bottle across a wide price spread ($25–$1,599). Suduiraut's relative value compared to d'Yquem drives strong collector interest: benchmark vintages routinely achieve 95+ Parker points yet trade at a fraction of d'Yquem prices. Investment-grade cases tend to be 6×75cl and 12×75cl presentations of 2001, 1989, 2009, and 2015.

Suduiraut's 2001 regularly earns 96–98-point scores and is considered one of the finest Sauternes vintages of the modern era; auction prices for 12-bottle cases of this vintage have exceeded $2,000.
The estate's 92 hectares are planted 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc; average vine age across the domaine exceeds 35 years, contributing to concentrated must.
AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1992 and invested in a new barrel cellar; the same ownership group also controls Château Pichon Baron and Quinta do Crasto.
Castelnau de Suduiraut, the second wine, averages $176 per bottle at auction across 182 lots — a premium over the grand vin owing to its smaller, more selective bottling.

In the Glass

Suduiraut is built on Sémillon botrytis richness: deep gold wines with aromas of candied apricot, fresh pineapple, honey, saffron, and beeswax. The palate is unctuous and full-bodied, balanced by the estate's characteristically higher natural acidity compared to neighbouring châteaux. Long barrel ageing in new oak adds vanilla and toasted almond nuance. The finish is extraordinarily persistent, with saline minerality cutting through the sweetness.
