Bordeaux Superieur

Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices

Bordeaux Supérieur is a step above the basic Bordeaux AOC in the regional hierarchy, with stricter rules on minimum alcohol (10.5% vs 10%), lower maximum yields, and mandatory ageing before release. The appellation covers the same vast area as Bordeaux AOC — essentially any eligible vineyard in the Gironde department — but the higher standards mean Bordeaux Supérieur bottles consistently offer better quality and structure than their simpler counterparts. The Entre-Deux-Mers plateau between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, together with the Côtes de Bordeaux subregions (Blaye, Bourg, Castillon, Cadillac, Francs), provides the bulk of Bordeaux Supérieur production. The appellation primarily produces red wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, though a small quantity of rosé and white is permitted. At auction, Bordeaux Supérieur rarely appears as a collectible item — it is overwhelmingly a restaurant and everyday wine category — but château-specific bottlings from serious producers, particularly in the right bank Côtes, can represent excellent value for early drinking at $15–40 per bottle.

Bordeaux Superieur
01

Bordeaux Supérieur requires a minimum of 10.5% alcohol and lower maximum yields than basic Bordeaux AOC, but its most meaningful regulatory distinction is a mandatory minimum ageing period before release — a rule that filters out the most underdeveloped, early-harvested wines and ensures a baseline of structure.

02

The appellation includes some of Bordeaux's most exciting value-for-money producers, particularly in the right bank Côtes de Bordeaux zones where limestone soils produce structured, mineral reds at prices well below neighbouring appellations like Pomerol and Saint-Emilion.

03

Several négociant brands produce large-volume Bordeaux Supérieur from contracted growers across the Gironde, accounting for the majority of the appellation's auction activity; these bottles represent consistent, if unexciting, drinking at modest price points.

04

A small number of 'super-Bordeaux Supérieur' estates — serious producers who classify under this appellation for geographical reasons rather than quality constraints — produce wines that regularly score 88–92 points and offer some of the best price-to-quality ratios available in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Supérieur reds show classic Merlot-forward character: ripe red and black fruit, soft tannins, and a warm, round mid-palate. The better examples have enough structure to age 5–10 years, developing a secondary complexity of dried herbs, tobacco, and leather. The whites (rare at auction) are crisp Sauvignon Blanc-led dry wines for early drinking. Overall, the style is approachable and fruit-forward rather than complex or age-worthy.
