Pessac-Leognan

Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices

Pessac-Léognan is the most prestigious sub-region of Graves and the only Bordeaux appellation to hold Grands Crus Classés for both red and white wines. Established as a separate AOC in 1987 to differentiate the highest-performing communes on the southern outskirts of Bordeaux — including Pessac, Léognan, Talence, Mérignac, and Martillac — it is home to estates whose reputation long predates the modern classification system. Château Haut-Brion holds a unique distinction as the only non-Médoc estate included in the 1855 Classification, where it stands as a Premier Cru alongside Lafite, Latour, Margaux, and Mouton. The appellation's soils are a complex mosaic of deep gravel, clay, and sand over limestone, producing red wines of exceptional mineral tension and white wines of extraordinary complexity and longevity. The reds are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, developing graphite, tobacco, and truffle with age; the whites — blended from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon — are among the most sought-after dry whites at auction worldwide. Haut-Brion Blanc and Laville Haut-Brion (now La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc) are trophy whites that regularly command $400–2,000 per bottle. Smith Haut Lafitte, Domaine de Chevalier, Pape Clément, Malartic-Lagravière, Carbonnieux, and Latour-Martillac round out an appellation of unusual depth and consistency.

Pessac-Leognan
01

Château Haut-Brion is the only non-Médoc estate included in Napoleon III's 1855 Classification, placed as a Premier Cru alongside Lafite, Latour, Margaux, and Mouton — a testament to its centuries-long reputation predating modern classification.

02

Pessac-Léognan is the only Bordeaux AOC to grant Cru Classé status for both red and white wines, with 16 classified estates; its dry whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are considered among France's finest and most age-worthy outside of Burgundy.

03

Laville Haut-Brion (rebranded as La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc in 2009) and Haut-Brion Blanc are the rarest and most valuable Bordeaux whites at auction, with older vintages regularly achieving $600–2,000 per bottle — comparable to top Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet Premiers Crus.

04

The appellation was created in 1987 specifically to distinguish Graves's top communes from the broader, less prestigious Graves AOC — a political and commercial decision that has since been vindicated by the auction premium commanded by Pessac-Léognan labels over generic Graves.

In the Glass

Pessac-Léognan reds show a distinctive earthy, minerally character — graphite, tobacco, dried herbs, and dark fruit with a firm, precise tannic structure. With age, great vintages develop truffle, leather, and cigar box complexity. The whites are arguably even more distinctive: rich and textured from barrel-fermented Sémillon, but cut through with Sauvignon Blanc's citrus and freshness, developing honeyed, lanolin, and smoky mineral notes over decades.
