About Pessac-Leognan
Pessac-Léognan is the northern part of the Graves, just south of Bordeaux, and became its own appellation in 1987. It covers eight communes, including Pessac, Talence, Léognan and Martillac, with about 1,580 hectares of vines on very gravelly soil; some vineyards are now surrounded by the city's suburbs. Unusually for Bordeaux, it is known for both reds and dry whites, though red dominates. It includes Château Haut-Brion, the only red outside the Médoc ranked in 1855, and every château in the 1953/59 Graves classification. Pape Clément, founded by Pope Clement V, is the oldest named property in Bordeaux.
