Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier in the Pessac-Leognan appellation of Graves produces both red and white wines classified as Grand Cru Classe de Graves—one of only a handful of properties achieving classification in both colors. The estate, owned by the Bernard family since 1983, farms approximately 35 hectares of red varieties and 4.5 hectares of white on sandy gravel soils in a forest clearing near Leognan. The white Domaine de Chevalier—a Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend fermented and aged in new oak—has long been considered one of Bordeaux's greatest dry whites. The red is a structured, slow-developing Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend in classic Pessac-Leognan proportions. At auction, 769 lots average $99 per bottle reaching $1,476, with 2009 the top vintage year. The white typically commands the highest per-bottle prices—often $150–300 in top vintages—while the red trades more modestly. Olivier Bernard has maintained consistently high standards, with the white regularly receiving 95–98 points for exceptional vintages.

Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, produced from just 4.5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Semillon (30%), is fermented entirely in new French oak barrels—an unusual approach producing wines of extraordinary complexity and aging potential, developing over 15–30 years in top vintages.
The white Domaine de Chevalier is classified as Grand Cru Classe de Graves for white wine—one of only 6 properties at this level—and regularly achieves 95–98 points, placing it alongside Haut-Brion Blanc and Laville Haut-Brion among Bordeaux's greatest dry whites.
The estate is situated in a forest clearing in Leognan that provides natural temperature moderation and protection from frost; this microclimate contributes both to the Sauvignon Blanc's aromatic precision and the red's natural freshness and structural definition.
Olivier Bernard has championed organic practices at Domaine de Chevalier, obtaining certification in recent years and farming both red and white blocks without synthetic pesticides or herbicides—a commitment distinguishing the estate from many larger classified Graves properties.

The white defines the portfolio: Sauvignon Blanc-dominant with Semillon richness—grapefruit, white peach, beeswax, and smoky oak from barrel fermentation—developing into extraordinary hazelnut, honey, and toasted brioche complexity with age. The red shows classic Pessac-Leognan structure: blackcurrant, tobacco, graphite, and earthy mineral depth; firm refined tannins require 10–20 years. Both wines share a distinctive forest-clearing freshness and structural precision differentiating them from richer, more opulent Medoc or Pomerol counterparts.
