The Médoc AOC — distinct from the broader Haut-Médoc appellation — covers the northern tip of the Médoc peninsula above Saint-Estèphe, a flat, less well-drained region where soils are heavier and the gravel ridges that produce great Bordeaux are largely absent. Despite producing wines that trade at a fraction of Haut-Médoc prices, the Médoc appellation has undergone sustained quality improvement since the 1990s, with a growing number of Crus Bourgeois estates producing honest, fruit-driven Merlot-led clarets that offer some of the best everyday-drinking value in Bordeaux. The communes of Bégadan, Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, Saint-Christoly-de-Médoc, Valeyrac, and Civrac-en-Médoc are the main production centres. Château Potensac (owned by the Delon family of Léoville Las Cases) stands out as the most prestigious estate in the appellation, its wines tightly structured and age-worthy; Château La Tour de By, Greysac, and Goulée (the second wine of Cos d'Estournel in the north Médoc) are also noteworthy. At auction, most Médoc AOC wines are consumed rather than collected, trading at $20–60 per bottle and offering considerable value for early-to-mid-term drinking.

Château Potensac is owned by Dominique Delon, the same family that controls Léoville Las Cases (a celebrated Deuxième Cru Classé in Saint-Julien), and is managed with the same rigour applied to Las Cases; it consistently stands as the finest wine in the Médoc AOC and is considered a benchmark for what the region can achieve.

02

The northern Médoc lies on a peninsula formed by the last ice age's deposits of Pyrenean gravel carried down the Garonne; the gravel ridges thin dramatically north of Saint-Estèphe, accounting for the step-change in wine quality between the two appellations and the significant price differential at auction.

03

Goulée, produced by Cos d'Estournel's team from a 36-hectare estate in Saint-Christoly-de-Médoc, represents a fascinating experiment: a Second Growth pedigree applied to Médoc AOC fruit, producing a structured, mineral wine at under $30 that consistently demonstrates how management and selection can transcend appellation boundaries.

04

The Médoc appellation includes the most northerly point of cultivated Bordeaux — the Pointe de Grave — where the peninsula narrows and the Gironde meets the Atlantic; vineyards here experience measurable maritime influence from the Bay of Biscay that moderates temperatures but also increases humidity, requiring careful viticultural management.

In the Glass

Médoc wines are typically soft, fruit-driven, and round — Merlot-dominated with plum, red berry, and light earthy notes. The best estates, like Potensac, show more structure: firm Cabernet tannins, cassis, cedar, and a mineral dryness on the finish. Most are designed for drinking within 5–10 years of vintage and offer honest, satisfying claret typicity without the complexity or longevity of the Haut-Médoc communes.
