Saint-Julien

Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices

Saint-Julien is Bordeaux's most consistently excellent commune: the smallest of the four Haut-Médoc appellations of note (920 hectares), it contains no First Growth but no classification below Third Growth either — the entire appellation is classified, a distinction no other Médoc commune can claim. The estates sit on a series of gently sloping gravel ridges between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south, producing wines that combine Pauillac's structure with Margaux's elegance. The three Léoville estates — Léoville Barton, Léoville Las Cases, and Léoville Poyferré — were once a single property; their division after the Revolution created three distinct and competing interpretations of the same terroir. Léoville Las Cases' Clos du Marquis parcel, fenced like a Burgundian clos, is considered one of the finest expressions of Saint-Julien. Ducru-Beaucaillou and Gruaud Larose form the classical core of the appellation's Second Growths. Talbot, a Fourth Growth, consistently trades above its classification and has become one of the most value-conscious buys in Bordeaux auction.

Saint-Julien
01

Saint-Julien is the only commune in the Médoc where every classified estate holds a ranking — no estate fell below Third Growth in 1855 — reflecting the exceptional and consistent quality of the appellation's gravel ridges.

02

The three Léoville estates once formed a single property; divided after the French Revolution, they now produce three distinct wines from adjacent parcels and represent one of Bordeaux's most fascinating comparative tasting exercises.

03

Léoville Las Cases created the 'Super Second' concept in the 1980s and 1990s by consistently achieving critical scores and auction prices matching First Growths, catalysing a broader reassessment of the 1855 classification's relevance.

04

Ducru-Beaucaillou, on a gravel plateau overlooking the Gironde, produces what many critics consider the most refined and Margaux-like wine in Saint-Julien — an elegant, fragrant style that has made it one of the appellation's most collected estates.

In the Glass

Saint-Julien sits between Pauillac and Margaux in style: blackcurrant and cedar from Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a silkiness and perfume that differentiates it from the more austere Pauillacs. Léoville Las Cases is structured and age-worthy; Ducru-Beaucaillou is more aromatic and elegant; Léoville Barton is classically built, requiring patience. All share a refinement and completeness that makes Saint-Julien the most reliably excellent commune in the Médoc.
