Clos du Marquis

Clos du Marquis has a unique position in Bordeaux: for most of its history it was the second wine of Château Léoville-Las Cases, one of Saint-Julien's finest and most sought-after estates. The Delon family repositioned Clos du Marquis as an independent wine in 2007, giving it its own distinct identity and vineyard source from parcels that had previously contributed to Las Cases. The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, produced from a specific parcel of the Las Cases property adjacent to Pichon-Baron. As a result, it carries the DNA of one of Bordeaux's greatest terroirs at a fraction of the Grand Vin's price. Across 444 auction lots, the estate averages $75 per bottle with a ceiling of $1,195. The 2010 and 2016 vintages are considered the estate highlights, both earning scores of 93–95 from Wine Advocate. The wine offers collectors rare access to the Léoville-Las Cases terroir at under $100 per bottle.

In the Glass

Clos du Marquis is classic Saint-Julien: blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and tobacco with a fine gravel mineral quality that distinguishes it from heavier Pauillac neighbours. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, providing structural precision; Merlot adds plushness and mid-palate texture; Cabernet Franc contributes floral and herbal complexity. The style is firm in youth, requiring 8–12 years to fully open, and capable of evolving for 20+ years in top vintages.
