Chateau Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the most historically significant estates in Saint-Julien, a Second Growth that has been producing wine since the 1720s. The large 82-hectare estate was famously unified by Baron Sarget de Gruaud-Larose after a period of division, and subsequently passed through the Cordier family — who owned it from 1917 to 1993 — before being acquired by the Merlaut family of Taillan. The wine is known for its powerful, concentrated style with great structure and excellent longevity. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with significant Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. In its finest vintages — 1982, 1986, 1990, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 — Gruaud Larose produces wine of remarkable depth, combining St-Julien's elegance with a power and tannic structure more reminiscent of Pauillac. The estate also produces a second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose. At auction, Gruaud Larose represents excellent value among classified growths, with great vintages still available at prices significantly below the most famous estates. Collectors who appreciate traditional St-Julien character and long aging potential find it one of the most reliable choices in the appellation.

In the Glass

Gruaud Larose delivers a more powerful expression of St-Julien than its neighbours: blackcurrant, plum, tobacco, cedar, and earthy spice, with dense tannins that require time to integrate. Great vintages reward 15–25 years of cellaring, revealing a complex and harmonious wine of real grandeur.
