Chateau Leoville Poyferre

Chateau Leoville Poyferre is the largest of the three Leoville estates in Saint-Julien and the one that underwent the most dramatic quality transformation in modern times. Under Didier Cuvelier from 1979 and with consultant Michel Rolland accelerating improvements through the 1990s, the estate progressed from underperformer relative to its Second Growth status to one of Saint-Julien's most reliable producers. The grand vin is planted across 80 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant parcels on classic Medoc gravel, producing wines with firm structure, blackcurrant depth, and impressive aging potential. At auction, 1,094 lots average $137 per bottle with a high of $2,500. The 2010 vintage is the top auction year, a wine that received 100-point scores from major critics and trades above $250 per bottle. Other benchmark vintages include 2000, 2005, 2009, 2015, and 2016. The second wine Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre offers accessible Saint-Julien character. Poyferre's approximately 25% Merlot slightly softens the frame relative to Las Cases while adding aromatic complexity, contributing to broad collector appeal.

The 2010 Leoville Poyferre received 100 points from Robert Parker—the highest score ever awarded the estate—and has traded consistently above $250–300 per bottle at auction, significantly above the $137 portfolio average.
The estate covers approximately 80 hectares planted to roughly 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—one of the largest single-vineyard holdings among Saint-Julien's classified growths.
Michel Rolland's consultation from the early 1990s drove a transformation toward riper, more concentrated fruit and greater extraction—a shift that propelled the estate from consistent underperformer to top-scoring Second Growth.
Leoville Poyferre occupies the northeastern portion of what was once the single Leoville estate, divided in the early 19th century; it shares the same gravel terroir as Las Cases and Barton but farms a larger area than either sibling.

In the Glass

Saint-Julien Cabernet-dominant blend: blackcurrant, plum, cedar, and mocha with silky Medoc tannins. More approachable in youth than Las Cases due to the higher Merlot proportion, with a rounder mid-palate and earlier-developing aromatics. Top vintages show graphite, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate with 10–15 years of age. Consistent across recent decades with richer, more extracted fruit in warm years like 2009 and 2010.
