Chateau Saint-Pierre

Château Saint-Pierre is a 4ème Cru Classé estate in Saint-Julien, acquired by Henri Martin of Château Gloria in 1982 and now run by the Martin family under Jean-Louis Triaud. The estate is small by Médoc standards—approximately 17 hectares—producing a single wine from predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc on the classic Saint-Julien gravel-over-clay soils. The wine is vinified at the estate but historically shared cellar facilities with Gloria and Gruaud-Larose. Saint-Pierre is one of the least-known of the 4th growths, which contributes to moderate secondary-market pricing despite consistent quality. Auction activity: 186 lots at $80 average with the 2010 vintage most-traded—a year when Saint-Julien performed exceptionally well and critical scores for Saint-Pierre were among the highest in the estate's modern history. Prices cap at $155, reflecting the wine's position as a good-value Saint-Julien classified growth rather than a prestige collectible.

In the Glass

Classic Saint-Julien 4th growth: blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, lead pencil, and dried herbs on a well-structured, medium-full body. The characteristic gravel-soil minerality and Cabernet Sauvignon precision are evident; the wine is austere in youth but opens into elegant, complex Médoc at 10–15 years. Less concentration than neighbouring 2nd growths but exemplary balance.
