Margaux
Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices
Margaux is the southernmost and arguably most elegant of the four great Haut-Médoc communes, its wines distinguished by an aromatic finesse and silkiness of texture that sets them apart from the more structured styles of Pauillac and Saint-Julien. The appellation covers five villages — Margaux, Soussans, Cantenac, Labarde, and Arsac — across gravelly ridges that thin out and interleave with sandy soils closer to the estuary. Château Margaux itself is the most architecturally and historically significant estate in Bordeaux: the neoclassical château, designed by Louis Combes in 1810, is a UNESCO-listed monument. Under the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977, the estate has undergone a renaissance, consistently producing wines of extraordinary perfume and complexity. Château Palmer, technically a Third Growth classified in 1855, has so consistently overperformed that its wines trade at First Growth prices at auction — the 1961 and 2009 vintages in particular are legendary. Rauzan-Ségla and d'Issan represent the classic secondary tier of Margaux estates with strong auction followings.
In the Glass
Margaux is the most perfumed and feminine of the Haut-Médoc communes: violets, rose, red fruit, and cassis on the nose, with a silky, fine-grained texture that gives the wines their hallmark elegance. The tannins are less aggressive than Pauillac, the wines more approachable young, but the finest examples — Margaux itself, Palmer — are as long-lived as any First Growth, developing extraordinary complexity of cigar box, leather, and dried flowers over 20–30 years.
