About Haut-Medoc
Haut-Médoc is a Left Bank appellation created in 1936. It runs for about 60 kilometres along the Gironde from the edge of Bordeaux to the Médoc AOC in the north. Within its area sit the village appellations of Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Listrac-Médoc, Moulis-en-Médoc and Margaux. Fifteen other communes use the Haut-Médoc name itself. Only a handful of the 1855 classified growths carry the plain Haut-Médoc label, but many Cru Bourgeois estates do. The area was largely salt marsh until Dutch merchants drained it in the 17th century. The reds are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends from gravel, chalk and clay soils.
