Haut-Medoc

Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices

Haut-Médoc is the catch-all appellation covering the prestigious left bank strip of the Médoc peninsula between the city of Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave, encompassing all of the famous communes — Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe — but in practice applying only to wines produced in areas between those communes, or in the less prestigious communes of Ludon, Macau, Arsac, and others. The appellation is something of a paradox: it contains some of Bordeaux's finest classified estates that technically qualify for the broader Haut-Médoc designation (including Cantemerle, La Lagune, and La Tour Carnet), while the majority of Haut-Médoc wines are produced by Crus Bourgeois estates selling at a fraction of the price. The appellation's soils are more variable than the famous communes, ranging from excellent deep gravel in spots like La Lagune (in Ludon, closer to Margaux) to heavier clay soils further north. Sociando-Mallet, though never classified, has built a reputation as the finest unclassified estate in the Médoc through decades of consistent quality, trading at prices that rival many Cru Classé châteaux. Château Cantemerle (5ème Cru Classé), Château Belgrave, and Château de Camensac are key classified properties. The Crus Bourgeois designation, revamped in 2020 with annual assessments, represents the best-value wines in the Médoc.

Haut-Medoc
01

Haut-Médoc is home to Sociando-Mallet, one of the most consistently overachieving unclassified estates in Bordeaux; never included in the 1855 Classification despite multiple opportunities, it trades at prices rivalling several Cru Classé châteaux and is considered by many critics to be of second-growth quality.

02

The appellation contains five classified estates from the 1855 Classification — Cantemerle, Belgrave, de Camensac, La Tour Carnet, and La Lagune — all of which were classified under 'Haut-Médoc' rather than any single commune name, reflecting their position in the less prestigious inter-commune zones.

03

The Crus Bourgeois designation was completely restructured in 2020, introducing annual blind tastings to award three tiers (Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel), replacing the previous system that had been invalidated by a French court ruling; Haut-Médoc contains more Crus Bourgeois than any other single appellation.

04

Despite lower prestige than the named communes, the best Haut-Médoc wines from exceptional vintages can age 20–30 years and offer extraordinary value: Sociando-Mallet 2000 or 2005 from good cellars consistently outperforms classified growths in blind comparative tastings.

In the Glass

Haut-Médoc wines range from lean, angular, and tannic in lighter vintages to rich, cassis-driven, and firmly structured in great years. The best — Sociando-Mallet, Cantemerle — show classic Cabernet Sauvignon typicity: blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and restrained earth, with the tannin backbone to age. The more modest Crus Bourgeois are fruitier and more accessible young, with plum and dried herb notes and soft, Merlot-influenced structure.
