Lalande de Pomerol

Bordeaux · France · Wine Auction Prices

Lalande-de-Pomerol is the satellite appellation immediately north of Pomerol, separated from it by the Barbanne stream and producing similarly styled red wines from Merlot-dominated blends on a mix of gravel, sand, clay, and some patches of the iron-rich 'crasse de fer' soils that underpin Pomerol's most celebrated terroirs. While lacking any single wine to match the prestige of Pétrus or Le Pin, Lalande-de-Pomerol has benefited enormously from the global enthusiasm for the right bank style: since the 1990s, the appellation has attracted significant investment, and the best estates now produce wines of genuine complexity that outperform their price point significantly. Château Belles-Graves, La Fleur de Boüard (owned by Hubert de Boüard, co-owner of Angélus), Château Tournefeuille, Bertineau Saint-Vincent, Château des Annereaux, and Haut-Chatain are among the leading names. The appellation has two communes — Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac — with Néac's soils generally considered more complex and capable of producing the most structured wines. At auction, Lalande-de-Pomerol represents excellent value for Merlot-based drinking pleasure at a fraction of Pomerol prices.

Lalande de Pomerol
01

La Fleur de Boüard is co-owned by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, who manages Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion (Premier Grand Cru Classé 'A'); his investment brought Angélus-level winemaking philosophy — low yields, rigorous selection, new oak — to an appellation that had previously been modest, raising the bar for all of Lalande-de-Pomerol.

02

The iron-rich 'crasse de fer' subsoil found in parts of Néac — the same formation that underlies Pétrus's most prized parcel — gives the best Lalande-de-Pomerol wines their distinctive weight and structural complexity, a characteristic that earlier generations of winemakers failed to exploit through poor viticulture and premature harvesting.

03

Lalande-de-Pomerol offers perhaps the clearest value proposition for new collectors entering the right bank market: wines from top estates in great vintages (2015, 2016, 2018) are routinely available for $30–70, compared to $200–500+ for equivalent-quality Pomerol from less famous addresses.

04

The Barbanne stream that forms the border between Pomerol and Lalande-de-Pomerol is a purely administrative boundary — on either side of it, parcels share identical geological compositions, and wine from the Lalande side is mineralogically indistinguishable from its more prestigious neighbour.

In the Glass

Lalande-de-Pomerol is lush and fruit-forward in the Pomerol tradition — ripe plum, black cherry, and mocha from Merlot, with the velvety texture and warmth that define right bank wines. The tannins are softer and earlier-resolving than Saint-Emilion, with more immediate appeal in youth; the better estates show iron and mineral notes on the finish, particularly from Néac parcels, hinting at the complexity that extended cellaring can reveal.
