Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is the third of Pauillac's First Growth triumvirate, elevated from Second to First Growth in 1973 — the only revision to the 1855 Médoc Classification in its history — largely through the sustained campaigning of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The estate farms 85 hectares on a gravel ridge in the heart of Pauillac, producing a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine (typically 80–85% Cabernet) of extraordinary power, dark fruit, and tobacco complexity. The estate's second wine, Le Petit Mouton, has become one of the most collected second labels in Bordeaux. Baron Philippe de Rothschild transformed Mouton from a good Bordeaux estate into a global luxury brand through two revolutionary decisions: the artist label (begun in 1945, featuring works by Picasso, Chagall, Andy Warhol, and Jeff Koons among others) and the creation of Mouton Cadet, which democratised the Mouton name and cross-subsidised investment in the grand vin. He also co-founded Opus One with Robert Mondavi in 1979 — the first major transatlantic wine partnership. The 1945 vintage, with its 'V for Victory' label designed by Philippe Jullian, is among the most historically significant and financially valuable Bordeaux wines at auction. The 1959, 1982, 1986, 2000, 2009, 2010, and 2018 are considered the modern benchmarks. Mouton's artist labels make it uniquely collectible as both wine and art object, with complete vertical collections commanding significant premiums.

Mouton Rothschild is the only estate to have changed its ranking in the 1855 Médoc Classification: elevated from Second to First Growth in 1973 after decades of sustained lobbying by Baron Philippe de Rothschild — commemorated by the label motto 'Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change' reversed to 'Premier je suis, second j'étais, Mouton ne change.'
The artist-label series, begun with Philippe Jullian's V-for-Victory design on the 1945 vintage, has commissioned works from Picasso (1973), Chagall (1970), Andy Warhol (1975), and Jeff Koons (2010) — making complete vertical collections uniquely valuable as both wine and cultural artefact.
Mouton's 1945 vintage is among the most financially significant wine lots at auction: a 5-litre Imperial of the 1945 sold for $350,000 at Sotheby's in 1997, and individual bottles regularly achieve $4,000–$20,000 depending on fill level and provenance.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild co-founded Opus One in Napa Valley with Robert Mondavi in 1979 — the first major transatlantic joint venture wine — demonstrating a global ambition unique among Médoc estate owners of the era.

In the Glass

Mouton Rothschild is the most flamboyant and exotic of the Pauillac First Growths: rich blackcurrant, dark chocolate, tobacco, and exotic spice on the nose, with a plushness of texture and aromatic complexity that sets it apart from the more austere Latour and the more cerebral Lafite. The tannins are ripe and enveloping; the finish is long and spiced. Great vintages require 15–20 years and can age 40–50 years.
