Clarendon Hills

Clarendon Hills is a boutique South Australian producer founded by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990, sourcing from old-vine Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon from the McLaren Vale and Clarendon subregion on the slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The flagship Astralis Shiraz — sourced from a single 1920-planted vineyard block in Clarendon at 370 metres elevation — is one of Australia's most critically acclaimed wines, earning near-perfect scores from Robert Parker. Bratasiuk's philosophy emphasises low yields, minimal intervention, and wines that express extreme terroir specificity. Astralis is typically made from 100% whole-berry fermentation, aged in French oak (50% new), and shows remarkable complexity and longevity. Piggott Range Syrah and Kangarilla Vineyard Chardonnay complete the estate portfolio. Across 436 auction lots, Clarendon Hills averages $151 per bottle with prices reaching $1,554. Robert Parker awarded Astralis 100 points for the 1998 vintage — a score that dramatically elevated the estate's international profile.

Astralis Shiraz, sourced from 1920-planted vines in Clarendon at 370 metres elevation, received a perfect 100 points from Robert Parker for the 1998 vintage — one of only a handful of Australian wines to achieve this distinction.
Roman Bratasiuk sources from some of McLaren Vale's oldest vine material, including pre-Prohibition Grenache and Shiraz blocks that provide naturally low yields and extreme concentration.
436 auction lots average $151 per bottle with a ceiling of $1,554, reflecting a stratified portfolio where Astralis commands $400–800 per bottle and other cuvées trade at significantly lower prices.
Piggott Range Syrah, from a separate high-altitude McLaren Vale site, has consistently earned 94–96 points and represents the estate at a more accessible price than Astralis.

In the Glass

Clarendon Hills Astralis is a wine of extraordinary intensity: dense blackberry, black olive, dark chocolate, leather, and iron minerality from old Clarendon Shiraz vines. The elevation provides freshness and structure that distinguish it from lower-altitude McLaren Vale. Piggott Range is more immediately approachable. The Grenache-based wines show fragrant red fruit, spice, and silky texture. All wines are full-bodied and built for extended cellaring — Astralis demands 15–20 years before showing its full complexity.
