Domaine des Baumard

Domaine des Baumard is a family estate in Rochefort-sur-Loire in the Anjou-Saumur region, widely regarded as the Loire Valley's premier source of Chenin Blanc in both dry and sweet expressions. Jean Baumard established the estate's modern reputation in the 1950s, and his son Florent took over in 1987, steering the domaine to consistently high quality across Savennieres, Quarts de Chaume, and Coteaux du Layon. The Quarts de Chaume — a Grand Cru appellation covering just 50 hectares in the Layon Valley — is the domaine's auction centerpiece, produced from botrytis-affected Chenin Blanc harvested in multiple tries. Baumard's Quarts de Chaume is notable for relatively restrained extraction compared to some rivals, producing wines with a taut, mineral structure alongside honeyed stone fruit. The 2005 vintage of Quarts de Chaume is the most traded at auction, reflecting the exceptional botrytis conditions that year. At auction, 140 lots of Quarts de Chaume average $75 per bottle with a ceiling of $984, the highest prices attached to older magnum and half-bottle formats from vintages such as 1990 and 1997. The Savennieres Papillon — a dry Chenin from Rochefort-sur-Loire — averages $108 across 7 lots, unusually high for the appellation and reflecting its scarcity. Total portfolio activity spans 297 lots averaging $75.

Domaine des Baumard holds parcels in Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru, one of the Loire Valley's most exclusive sweet-wine appellations covering just 50 hectares, and is considered one of its reference producers alongside Chateau de Suronde.
The Quarts de Chaume is harvested in successive passes (tries successives) for botrytis selection, producing sweet Chenin Blanc with typically 80–120 g/L residual sugar balanced by sharp Loire acidity.
The 2005 vintage is the most traded year at auction; exceptional harvest conditions produced dense, unctuous wines that have received 95+ point scores and age gracefully for 20–50 years.
At auction, 140 Quarts de Chaume lots average $75 per bottle with a peak of $984 for large-format older vintages; the Savennieres Papillon dry Chenin averages an elevated $108 across its 7 auction appearances, reflecting extreme scarcity.

In the Glass

Baumard Quarts de Chaume is the quintessential sweet Loire Chenin: ripe apricot, quince, and honeyed beeswax on the nose, with a mineral, almost saline tension on the palate that prevents the sweetness from cloying. With age, notes of petrol, lanolin, and candied orange peel emerge. The Savennieres is dry, taut, and volcanic — green apple, chalk, and white flower with extraordinary aging potential. Both wines are defined by Chenin's acid precision.
