Domaine Didier Dagueneau

Domaine Didier Dagueneau was the most iconoclastic and quality-driven producer in Pouilly-Fumé, transforming the appellation's reputation through Didier's insistence on biodynamic viticulture, very low yields, and the use of barrique aging for Sauvignon Blanc. Dagueneau — the 'wild man of Pouilly' — was a legendary figure in French wine, a dog-sled racing champion who approached viticulture with the same intensity he brought to sport. His flagship wines — Silex, Pur Sang, and the single-vineyard Asteroïde and En Chailloux — redefined what Sauvignon Blanc could achieve in terms of complexity, mineral depth, and aging potential. Silex in particular, from a flinty, siliceous soil, is considered one of the world's great white wines. Didier died in a microlight accident in 2008; the estate has been run with equal dedication by his son Louis-Benjamin, who has continued both the biodynamic approach and the uncompromising quality standards. Production is tiny, with the top cuvées running to only a few hundred cases. At auction, Dagueneau's top wines — particularly Silex and Asteroïde from great vintages — command prices rivalling white Burgundy premiers and grands crus, an extraordinary achievement for a Loire Sauvignon Blanc.
