Domaine Pierre Usseglio

Domaine Pierre Usseglio et Fils is a family Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate founded in the mid-twentieth century and now operated by brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio. The domaine covers approximately 25 hectares of Châteauneuf vineyards, with the most celebrated wines being Réserve des Deux Frères and Mon Aïeul — both produced from old Grenache vines, the latter (meaning 'my ancestor') from parcels over 100 years old. Mon Aïeul is vinified and aged in a mix of demi-muids (600L oak casks), producing a wine of extraordinary concentration and longevity. The standard Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge and blanc complete the range. The domaine's strength is in old-vine Grenache of genuine depth: the top wines deliver complex secondary aromatics — dried herbs, iron, leather, and spice — alongside concentrated dark fruit. At auction, Usseglio averages $139 per bottle across 213 lots with peaks to $332. The narrow ceiling relative to the average confirms consistent premium positioning for the top wines without the extreme outliers of the appellation's most famous addresses. Réserve des Deux Frères and Mon Aïeul from 2007, 2010, and 2016 are the primary secondary market targets. Mon Aïeul's centenarian Grenache vines predate Phylloxera eradication efforts in the appellation, providing a direct connection to pre-industrial Châteauneuf viticulture through uninterrupted old-vine farming.

Domaine Pierre Usseglio's Mon Aïeul ('my ancestor') is produced from Grenache vines over 100 years old, aged in 600-liter demi-muids — one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most concentrated old-vine cuvées.
Brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio operate approximately 25 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, maintaining a traditional family structure that has resisted the acquisition pressure affecting many southern Rhône estates.
Réserve des Deux Frères ('reserve of the two brothers') is the estate's second prestige cuvée, drawn from old Grenache and aged in older oak — a step below Mon Aïeul in concentration but sharing the estate's old-vine character.
213 lots average $139 per bottle with a ceiling of $332; the relatively tight range reflects consistent premium positioning for old-vine Châteauneuf without extreme large-format or trophy-vintage outliers in the auction pool.

In the Glass

Pierre Usseglio's Châteauneuf-du-Pape is old-vine Grenache with genuine complexity: black cherry, dried fig, garrigue, leather, and iron from centenarian vines. Mon Aïeul adds extraordinary concentration and spice from demi-muid aging. Réserve des Deux Frères is more approachable but shares the old-vine savory depth. The standard rouge offers fresh-fruited, herb-driven Châteauneuf accessibility. All wines benefit from 8–20 years of cellaring.
