E. Guigal

Établissements Guigal was founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, in the heart of Côte Rôtie, and built into one of the Rhône Valley's most influential producers by his son Marcel Guigal, who joined in 1961 and transformed the company through single-vineyard bottlings that established the benchmark for the appellation. The three La La wines — La Mouline (first produced 1966), La Landonne (first released 1978), and La Turque (first released 1985) — established the global reference for collector-grade Côte Rôtie and helped define the northern Rhône's international reputation through the 1980s and 1990s. Marcel's practice of 42-month aging in 100% new oak for the La La series was unconventional but produced wines that attracted multiple perfect scores from Robert Parker, cementing their auction desirability among collectors worldwide. Auction data shows 1,899 lots at a $401 average with peaks to $4,305; La Mouline leads at $585 across 540 lots, La Landonne averages $566 across 352 lots, and La Turque achieves $438 across 379 lots. The 2013 vintage is most actively traded for La Mouline; 2003 for La Landonne. La Doriane, the Viognier-based Condrieu ($133/132 lots), and Ex Voto Rouge ($254/94 lots) complement the prestige single-vineyard program. The Brune et Blonde ($88/147 lots) provides the accessible appellation-level Côte Rôtie tier. Guigal also owns Château d'Ampuis, Château Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the former Jaboulet estate.

La Mouline averages $585 across 540 auction lots — the highest of the three La La wines by average price — with 2013 as the most actively traded vintage.
All three La La wines — La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque — have received multiple 100-point scores from Robert Parker, driving auction premiums that consistently exceed comparably scored Burgundy Premiers Crus.
La Landonne (planted 1973, first released 1978) averages $566 across 352 lots, the purely Syrah single-vineyard wine representing the most powerful and tannic of the three La La expressions.
Peak auction prices reached $4,305, typically for vertical packages or large-format bottles of late-1990s and early-2000s La Mouline from vintages with Parker 100-point scores.

In the Glass

Guigal's La La Côte Rôtie wines are among the world's most powerful Syrah expressions — La Mouline (blended with 11% Viognier) shows violet, white pepper, black olive, and exotic spice with an approachable, aromatic lift; La Landonne is purely Syrah with iron-mineral intensity, tar, smoked meat, and dark berry that demands 15–20 years of cellaring; La Turque sits between them with rich, velvety texture and red fruit alongside the appellation's signature pepper and spice. New oak integration is extensive but resolves magnificently with age.
