Falesco

Falesco is an Umbrian winery founded in 1979 by brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella in Montecchio, in the Umbria DOC zone near the Lazio border. Renzo Cotarella is one of Italy's most influential winemakers and consultants — known professionally as 'the winemaker of Italy' for his work with dozens of high-profile estates including Antinori and others in Tuscany, Umbria, and beyond. Falesco became the vehicle for the Cotarella brothers' own estate production, with Montiano — a single-varietal Merlot — as the flagship. Montiano was among the first Italian Merlots to achieve serious critical recognition, earning 90+ point scores from Robert Parker in multiple vintages and establishing a reputation for the grape in central Italy. Marciliano, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend, is the second prestige wine. At auction, Falesco averages $70 per bottle across 164 lots, with Montiano driving both volume and price. The wines are produced in an international style — ripe, polished, and oak-forward — reflecting Renzo Cotarella's consulting aesthetic. Rosso Vitiano is the entry-level label, providing accessible Umbrian blends at retail prices. The Cotarella name carries substantial prestige in Italian wine circles, lending Falesco credibility beyond what the estate's Umbrian DOC status might otherwise command. International buyers familiar with Cotarella's consulting work drive auction demand, particularly for Montiano back-vintages from the 1990s and early 2000s.

Falesco is co-founded by Renzo Cotarella, regarded as one of Italy's most influential winemakers and consultants, whose work with Antinori and dozens of other estates gave Falesco instant credibility upon its founding.
Montiano — the flagship single-varietal Merlot — was among the first Italian Merlots to earn repeated 90+ point scores from Robert Parker, establishing Umbria as a credible region for the variety.
At $70 average auction price across 164 lots, Falesco is priced comparably to quality Sicilian and Sardinian IGT wines — below Tuscany super-Tuscans despite comparable critical scores for Montiano.
Rosso Vitiano, the entry-level Umbrian blend at the low end of the price range, drives volume at auction and introduces the Cotarella brand to buyers seeking accessible Italian alternatives.

In the Glass

Montiano is 100% Merlot — dense, polished, and oak-influenced, showing plum, mocha, tobacco, and vanilla with full body and soft tannins. Marciliano (Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc) adds cassis, graphite, and more structure. The house style across the range is ripe and internationally oriented, with smooth tannins and generous extract. Central Italian terroir contributes earthy, herbal undertones beneath the fruit-forward profile.
