Guigal

Guigal is the Rhône Valley's most celebrated and most traded négociant-producer, a family-owned business founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 in Ampuis, Côte-Rôtie. Marcel Guigal, who took over from his father in 1961, has spent 60+ years building the house into the dominant commercial and quality force in the Northern Rhône, simultaneously producing wines at every price point — from the widely-distributed Côtes du Rhône Rouge at under $20 to the 'La La La' single-vineyard Côte-Rôties that command $400–$800 per bottle at auction. The three single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie cuvées — La Mouline (from old-vine Syrah on schist with approximately 11% co-fermented Viognier), La Landonne (100% Syrah on iron-rich soils), and La Turque (old-vine Syrah on schist with approximately 7% Viognier) — are aged 42 months in 100% new oak before release. This extreme oak treatment was controversial when Marcel Guigal introduced it in 1976 but is now recognised as producing wines of extraordinary complexity that evolve for 20–40 years. La Mouline is the most floral and perfumed; La Landonne the most powerful and tannic; La Turque the most balanced. Guigal has also expanded into Hermitage (through the acquisition of Vidal-Fleury and their own cellars), Saint-Joseph, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Château d'Ampuis cuvée, blending the finest parcels of the estate into a single Côte-Rôtie, is considered the benchmark for broad-based Côte-Rôtie quality and is consistently among the best-value wines in the Northern Rhône.

Marcel Guigal aged his single-vineyard Côte-Rôties 42 months in 100% new oak — a radical departure when introduced for the 1976 vintage and still extreme by any standard — producing wines that critics including Parker have scored 100 points more than 20 times.
La Mouline, first produced as a single-vineyard wine in 1966, is the oldest and most delicate of the trilogy: old-vine Syrah co-fermented with approximately 11% Viognier on schist soils in the south of Côte-Rôtie, producing a wine of extraordinary violet and white flower perfume.
Guigal controls approximately 70% of the Côte-Rôtie appellation's production through estate vineyards and long-term contracts — an unusual market dominance that reflects both the house's longevity and its role in establishing the appellation's international reputation.
The annual release of the 'La La La' trilogy is one of the Rhône Valley's most anticipated events; allocations are distributed through a controlled network, making the secondary auction market the primary route to acquiring older or rare vintages.

In the Glass

Guigal's 'La La La' trilogy represents the three faces of Côte-Rôtie Syrah: La Mouline is floral and ethereal (violets, white pepper, silky tannins); La Landonne is dark and tannic (iron, black olive, tar, and extraordinary density); La Turque balances both. All three share the hallmarks of great Northern Rhône Syrah — smoked meat, black olive, cracked pepper, and dark fruit — elevated by 42 months in new oak to an almost Burgundian complexity. Great vintages age 30–40 years.
