Marques de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta is one of the founding houses of modern Rioja, established in 1852 by Luciano de Murrieta — the man credited with making the first 'modern' Rioja wines, using Bordeaux techniques and barriques brought back from his travels in France. The estate's Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is one of Spain's most historic wines, produced only in exceptional years and released with many years of additional aging; individual bottles from legendary vintages such as 1934 and 1942 still appear at auction and remain extraordinary. The modern Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial and the Dalmau Reserva represent the estate's current excellence. The bodega owns 300 hectares of vineyards — one of the largest single-estate vineyard holdings in Rioja — and has been owned since 1983 by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family. At auction, historic bottles of Castillo Ygay from the 1930s–1950s are among the most important Spanish wines sold, while the modern estate's top bottlings are increasingly recognised for their exceptional quality.
