Numanthia

Numanthia is a premier Toro estate whose wines helped establish the DO as one of Spain's most compelling regions for age-worthy reds. Founded in 1998 by the Eguren family—who also own Sierra Cantabria and Remírez de Ganuza—the estate was subsequently sold to LVMH-owned Möet Hennessy in 2008. Its vineyards center on extremely old Tinta de Toro (a local Tempranillo clone), with some parcels exceeding 100 years of age and dry-farmed on sandy soils that protected them from phylloxera. The estate's three-tier structure runs from Termes (averaging $55 across 24 lots) through Numanthia ($94 across 55 lots) to the single-vineyard Termanthia ($159 across 61 lots), which was declared Wine Spectator Wine of the Year in 2006 for the 2004 vintage. That 2004 Termanthia remains the most traded vintage at auction. Lot prices peak at $664, representing the most sought-after Termanthia back vintages. The Numanthia cuvée itself, sourced from vines averaging 40–70 years, offers a more approachable profile at $94 average. Across 179 lots and an average of $100, Numanthia provides collectors reliable access to Toro's most age-worthy expressions at reasonable auction premiums.

Termanthia 2004 was named Wine Spectator Wine of the Year for 2006, cementing Numanthia's international reputation and driving sustained auction demand.
Termanthia is sourced from pre-phylloxera parcels exceeding 100 years of age, dry-farmed on sandy soils in the Toro DO.
The estate operates a clear three-tier structure: Termes ($55 avg), Numanthia ($94 avg), and Termanthia ($159 avg), each from progressively older vines.
LVMH subsidiary Möet Hennessy acquired Numanthia in 2008, bringing investment in cellar infrastructure while maintaining the Eguren-developed vineyard philosophy.

In the Glass

Numanthia's wines are defined by the Tinta de Toro grape's characteristic power and tannic density. Termanthia delivers black plum, licorice, roasted meat, and graphite with extraordinary concentration and a 20-year cellaring window. The Numanthia cuvée is more approachable—dark berry, espresso, and firm but supple tannin. Both wines carry the warmth of Toro's semi-arid climate balanced by the cooling influence of the Duero River.
