San Leonardo

San Leonardo is the flagship wine of Tenuta San Leonardo, a historic estate in the Vallagarina valley of Trentino in northeastern Italy, owned by the Guerrieri Gonzaga family since the 19th century. The estate is positioned in the southern part of Trentino where the alpine climate and alluvial soils of the Adige valley floor produce conditions suited to Bordeaux varieties. San Leonardo itself is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Cabernet Franc and Carménère, crafted with consultation from winemaker Giacomo Tachis — who also shaped Sassicaia — giving the wine an Italian-Bordeaux hybrid character. At auction, the wine averages $93 per bottle across 102 lots with a range up to $523. The estate and wine have attracted comparisons to classified Bordeaux due to the combination of Bordeaux varieties, Tachis' involvement, and the estate's aristocratic heritage. Older vintages from the 1990s, when Tachis was most actively involved, tend to command the highest auction prices. The IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti designation reflects the wine's location and the appellation's flexibility for non-indigenous Bordeaux varieties. Production is relatively limited for the flagship, sustaining modest auction scarcity.

San Leonardo was developed with input from Giacomo Tachis — the winemaker who created Sassicaia — lending the wine a prestige pedigree and a Bordeaux-influenced style that has earned it comparisons to classified Médoc estates.
The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Cabernet Franc and Carménère, unusual in Italy for the inclusion of Carménère, a variety nearly extinct in Bordeaux and rare in Italian viticulture.
Top auction lots reach $523 per bottle, driven primarily by well-preserved older vintages from the 1990s when Tachis was most directly involved with the estate's winemaking program.
Tenuta San Leonardo is owned by the Guerrieri Gonzaga family, one of Trentino's oldest noble families, with a documented history of viticulture on the estate stretching back several centuries.

In the Glass

Trentino Bordeaux blend of uncommon precision: Cabernet Sauvignon dominates with cassis, tobacco, cedar, and dried herb, while Cabernet Franc and Carménère add graphite, floral lift, and spice. The alpine influence from the Adige valley preserves natural acidity that Bordeaux-style blends from warmer Italian regions often lack. The wine ages exceptionally well — top vintages developing classical tertiary complexity of leather, earthiness, and dried fruit over 15–25 years.
