Valentini

Edoardo Valentini was for decades the most reclusive and demanding vigneron in central Italy, farming 65 hectares in Loreto Aprutino but releasing wine from barely 10% of the harvest — the rest sold off in bulk. The Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, a white wine capable of aging 30 years, is among the most singular expressions in Italian wine: made from the local Trebbiano d'Abruzzo variety (genetically distinct from Trebbiano Toscano), it undergoes a transformative extended aging in old wood that produces a wine of extraordinary complexity and texture. At $264 average across the 322-lot auction record, it is priced on par with serious Burgundy village wines. The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, similarly strict in selection, is among the most serious and age-worthy expressions of the variety anywhere. After Edoardo's death in 2006, his son Francesco has maintained the same exacting standards, keeping production minuscule and release timelines long — vintages are often released five to eight years after harvest. The Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo rosato, a third release, appears rarely at auction but commands strong prices when it does. The consistent price range of $21 to the upper ceiling reflects both the breadth of vintages in circulation and the estate's enduring importance.

Valentini releases wine from under 10% of the estate's harvest, with the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo averaging $264 per bottle — placing it among the most expensive central Italian whites on the secondary market.
The Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is vinified from a distinct local variety genetically unrelated to Trebbiano Toscano; its extended old-wood aging produces a white wine capable of 25–30 years of development.
Founder Edoardo Valentini died in 2006; his son Francesco continues the same extreme-selectivity approach, releasing vintages 5–8 years after harvest and creating perpetual secondary-market scarcity.
The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one of the definitive expressions of the variety, combining concentration, tannic structure, and acidity that sets it far apart from commercial Abruzzo reds.

In the Glass

Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is unlike any white wine in Italy: oxidative amber tones, beeswax, dried apricot, and walnut on the nose give way to a palate of extraordinary tension and salinity. With age, honey and petrol notes emerge while grip and length intensify. The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is dense with dark fruit, leather, and iron-mineral tannins — austere young, profound with decades of cellaring.
