Pappy Van Winkle is a family of ultra-premium Kentucky straight bourbon whiskeys produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, under license from the Van Winkle family — Julian Van Winkle III and his son Preston Van Winkle oversee production. The Van Winkle bourbons — 10, 12, 15, 20, and 23-year expressions — are produced in extremely limited quantities allocated through a lottery system, creating one of the most pronounced secondary market premiums in all of American spirits. The Special Reserve Lot B 12-Year, the primary auction item in this dataset, averages $813 per bottle at auction with top lots reaching $1,593. At retail, Lot B carries a suggested price of around $70–$80, meaning auction premiums regularly exceed 900%. The partnership between the Van Winkle family and Buffalo Trace began in 2002 when the Van Winkles moved production from the Stitzel-Weller distillery, which had been acquired by Diageo. The mash bill for Lot B and most Van Winkle expressions is a wheated bourbon — using wheat rather than rye as the secondary grain — which produces a softer, rounder spirit with vanilla and caramel notes that age particularly gracefully. The 2014 bottling appears most frequently in auction records, reflecting collector preference for well-documented older releases.
