Vilmart & Cie
Vilmart & Cie is a grower-Champagne from Rilly-la-Montagne in the Montagne de Reims, recognized as one of the finest and most authentic artisan producers in the region. The domaine farms 11 hectares of Chardonnay-dominant vineyards (70%) with the remainder Pinot Noir, all in Rilly-la-Montagne and Ludes. Laurent Champs, who took over from his father René in 1989, is widely credited with elevating Vilmart's quality to among the top grower-Champagnes. The estate ages wines exclusively in old oak barrels with no malolactic fermentation, producing Champagnes of extraordinary richness, complexity, and longevity. The Grand Cellier d'Or is the flagship cuvée — a barrel-fermented, vintage Champagne that ranks among the finest grower expressions in the region. At auction, prices average $237 per bottle across 123 lots, with a range from $68 to $1,230. The Cuvée Création is the prestige tête de cuvée, reaching the highest prices. Vilmart's small production and fervent following among Champagne enthusiasts drive strong secondary market demand.

In the Glass
Vilmart Champagnes are richer, more complex, and more age-worthy than typical grower-Champagnes: toasted brioche, honey, dried fruit, and a deep, creamy mouthfeel from barrel fermentation and extended lees aging. The Grand Cellier d'Or is Chardonnay-dominant with extraordinary depth; Cuvée Création is the most concentrated and demanding. All wines improve markedly with 5–10 years of post-disgorgement aging.
