Grande Vallée de la Marne

Champagne · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Grande Vallée de la Marne encompasses the Marne valley stretching west from Épernay, including the most important Champagne village of Aÿ — historically one of the most prestigious in the entire region — and extending through Hautvillers, where Dom Pérignon (Pierre Pérignon, the monk) worked at the Abbey of Hautvillers in the 17th century and is credited (apocryphally) with discovering the méthode champenoise. The valley is warmer and more sheltered than the plateau vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, ripening Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir to fuller, rounder profiles. Aÿ holds Grand Cru status and is a significant source for Bollinger, Gosset, and Deutz, all of which maintain strong connections to the village. Dom Pérignon, produced from a blend drawn across multiple zones including Hautvillers, is the world's most commercially significant prestige Champagne by auction volume. Pol Roger, based in Épernay and drawing on the Marne valley's resources, produces its Sir Winston Churchill cuvée from a blend kept secret by the house — one of Champagne's most consistently outstanding and age-worthy prestige cuvées.

Grande Vallée de la Marne
01

Hautvillers, above Épernay, is where monk Dom Pérignon worked from 1668 to 1715; though the 'discoverer of Champagne' story is largely myth, his genuine contributions to blending, cork use, and cellar management helped establish the foundations of modern Champagne production.

02

Aÿ is one of only 17 Grand Cru villages in Champagne and has historically been considered the finest source of Pinot Noir in the Marne valley; Bollinger farms Vieilles Vignes here, producing a rare non-sparkling Champagne Pinot Noir called La Côte aux Enfants.

03

Dom Pérignon is the most traded prestige Champagne at auction globally, with mature vintages (1990, 1996, 2002) regularly achieving $300–$600 per bottle; the rosé versions of great years command $400–$800.

04

Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut, created in 1981 as the world's first widely distributed dosage-free Champagne, established the zero-dosage (Brut Nature) style that now commands a dedicated collector following at auction.

In the Glass

Grande Vallée de la Marne Champagnes, anchored by Aÿ Pinot Noir and blended with Meunier and Chardonnay, are fuller-bodied and rounder than the austere Côte des Blancs style: red fruit, brioche, toasted almonds, and a warmer, more generous texture. Dom Pérignon is the archetype of Champagne elegance — perfectly balanced between fruit, acidity, and dosage. Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill adds a distinctive honeyed richness that develops into walnut and spice with age.
