About Clos des Papes
Clos des Papes is the Avril family's Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, named after a walled parcel near the old papal castle. Paul Avril began selling his wine under the Clos des Papes name in 1896, and the name was registered as a trademark for the domaine in 1902. His son, also Paul, carried on from 1963, and the estate is now run by Vincent Avril, who trained at the Burgundy wine school where his father had taught. Its 35 hectares are spread over 24 parcels across the appellation, farmed biodynamically with certification since 2011. Only one red and one white are made, each blended from all the parcels.
