About Fonseca
Fonseca Guimaraens is one of the largest Port houses. Its origins lie in the small shipper Fonseca, Monteiro & Co. In 1822 Manuel Pedro Guimaraens and his brother João Gonçalves Salgueiro took control, on condition that the Fonseca name stayed. Manuel Pedro, a liberal, later fled Portugal in an empty Port barrel and settled in England, where the firm was headquartered until 1927. Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman bought Fonseca in 1948 but kept it separate. Guimaraens family members have made almost every vintage since 1896, and David Guimaraens has been head winemaker since 1994. Its three main Douro quintas include Panascal, acquired in 1978.
