About Penfolds
Penfolds was founded at Magill, near Adelaide, in 1844 by English physician Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, who planted vine cuttings around their cottage, The Grange, and first made fortified wines as tonics for his patients. After Christopher died in 1870 Mary ran the winery, blending the wines herself, until she retired in 1884. By 1903 it was the Adelaide region's largest winery. After the Second World War chief winemaker Max Schubert, backed by chair Gladys Penfold Hyland, developed Grange Hermitage, later simply Grange; the Bin 389, 707, 28 and 128 reds followed in the 1960s. Family control ended in 1976, and Treasury Wine Estates now owns it.
