About Veuve Clicquot
Veuve Clicquot grew from a wine business that Philippe Clicquot, a Reims textile merchant and banker, started in 1772. His son François married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798 and expanded sales across Europe. When François died suddenly in 1805, his widow (veuve) chose to take over the house instead of letting it be wound up. She is credited with the first known vintage Champagne in 1810, the riddling table in 1816 and blended rosé in 1818. She also won customers in the royal courts of Europe, notably Russia. The yellow label dates from the late 19th century. Louis Vuitton bought the house in 1986, and it is now part of LVMH.
