A. & P. de Villaine

A. & P. de Villaine is the personal estate of Aubert de Villaine — co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti — and his American wife Pamela, established in 1973 when they purchased an 8-hectare domaine in the village of Bouzeron, Côte Chalonnaise. While Aubert's DRC association assured instant credibility, the estate has built an entirely independent reputation as the definitive champion of the Aligoté grape and the benchmark for honest, terroir-driven Chalonnaise winemaking. Aubert was instrumental in the 1997 elevation of Bouzeron to full AOC status — the only village appellation in Burgundy named for the Aligoté grape. Pierre de Benoist, Aubert and Pamela's nephew, has directed the domaine since 2000. The estate now covers three appellations: Bouzeron (Aligoté), Rully, and Mercurey, all farmed organically. At auction, the wines offer exceptional value — La Digoine Bourgogne Rouge and Rully Les Saint-Clou are beloved by collectors who prize authenticity over prestige.

Aubert de Villaine, co-director of DRC, founded this personal estate in 1973 with his wife Pamela in the Côte Chalonnaise village of Bouzeron — choosing an unfashionable appellation specifically to champion the overlooked Aligoté grape.
Aubert's advocacy was central to Bouzeron's elevation to AOC status in 1997 — the only Burgundy village appellation named for a single grape variety other than Pinot Noir or Chardonnay; his Aligoté Doré remains the benchmark for the appellation.
Pierre de Benoist has directed the domaine since 2000; all three appellations (Bouzeron, Rully, Mercurey) are farmed organically, continuing the de Villaine commitment to sustainable viticulture that mirrors the practices at DRC.
The estate's Bourgogne Rouge La Digoine and La Fortune — from old-vine Pinot Noir in the Côte Chalonnaise — consistently over-deliver for their price, earning critical acclaim as some of Burgundy's best-value reds and an auction following from DRC devotees.

In the Glass

A. & P. de Villaine wines are models of clean, precise, unpretentious Burgundy — the Bouzeron Aligoté is the finest expression of that grape in France, offering vivid citrus and floral aromatics with a piercingly fresh finish. Rully Les Saint-Clou shows gentle stone-fruit richness with good mineral tension. The Mercurey reds are earthy, focused, and age surprisingly well for wines from outside the Côte d'Or.
