About Burgundy
Burgundy, in east-central France, runs from Auxerre and Chablis in the north to Mâcon, or to Lyon if Beaujolais is included. Its famous reds are Pinot Noir and its famous whites Chardonnay, with Gamay and Aligoté in supporting roles. The region has more appellations than any other in France, about 100. They are ranked as regional, village, premier cru and grand cru, and almost all grand crus lie on the Côte d'Or. Burgundy's focus on individual plots dates to medieval monasteries. The Benedictines of Cluny and the Cistercians, who walled the Clos de Vougeot in 1336, mapped the vineyards. The climats of Burgundy are now on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
