Musigny

Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Musigny is Burgundy's most refined grand cru and one of the most sought-after Pinot Noir appellations in the world. The 10.7-hectare vineyard sits above Chambolle-Musigny village on thin Bajocian limestone soils, producing wines of extraordinary delicacy, perfume, and persistence. Comte de Vogüé controls 7.1 hectares — two-thirds of the grand cru — and his Vieilles Vignes cuvée, from vines averaging 70+ years, is the benchmark: silky, deep, and endlessly complex. Frédéric Mugnier's half-hectare parcel and Domaine Leroy's tiny holding round out the top producers. With 3,900 lots at auction averaging over $600 per bottle, Musigny is accessible only to the most committed Burgundy collectors. The name itself derives from the Latin 'musinium' — a reference to the mossy, peaty character that distinguished these soils centuries before the modern appellation. A small amount of Musigny Blanc exists (0.66 ha), produced exclusively by de Vogüé from Chardonnay.

Musigny
01

Musigny Blanc, produced by Comte de Vogüé from just 0.66 hectares of Chardonnay planted in a red-wine grand cru, is one of Burgundy's rarest wines — production is under 400 cases annually and auction prices exceed $1,500 per bottle.

02

Comte de Vogüé owns 7.1 of Musigny's 10.7 hectares, but replanted much of this in the 1990s; vines younger than 25 years are declassified to Chambolle-Musigny, making the Vieilles Vignes cuvée rare even for those on allocation.

03

Musigny sits at 270–290m elevation on a narrow band of Bajocian oolitic limestone with topsoil less than 25cm deep — the thinnest productive soils in the Côte de Nuits, forcing vine roots deep into rock and concentrating extract.

04

Frédéric Mugnier's 0.51-hectare parcel produces just 1,800–2,000 bottles annually; his Musigny averaged $1,200 per bottle at auction in 2022–2024, ranking it among Burgundy's five most expensive wines per bottle.

In the Glass

Musigny defines Burgundy's 'velvet glove' style: extraordinary finesse with surprising depth. Fresh raspberry, wild strawberry, and violet evolve toward sandalwood, incense, truffle, and dried flowers with a decade of age. The texture is ethereal — lighter than Chambertin, more structured than Romanée-Saint-Vivant — with a silky, persistent finish that can last 30+ seconds in great vintages. Compared to any other Pinot Noir on earth, Musigny is uniquely perfumed and complete.
