Chambertin

Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Chambertin is Burgundy's most powerful grand cru and the standard by which all Pinot Noir is measured. The 12.9-hectare vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin produces wines of extraordinary concentration, longevity, and complexity — what Gaston Roupnel called 'the most complete wine of Burgundy.' With 3,600 lots at auction averaging $1,033+ per bottle, Chambertin is both iconic and actively traded. Armand Rousseau (2.15 ha) is the reference producer: his Chambertin is among the half-dozen most sought-after Burgundy wines, averaging $1,800–2,500 per bottle. Domaine Leroy (0.51 ha), with biodynamic farming and yields under 15 hl/ha, commands $3,000–5,000. Trapet (1.9 ha), Ponsot (0.75 ha), and DRC (0.51 ha) complete the first tier. Chambertin's soils differ subtly from the adjacent Clos de Bèze: slightly deeper, with active brown clay over Premeaux limestone, producing wine of greater body and power but equal or lesser finesse. Napoleon's reported preference for Chambertin above all other wines — a bottle daily on campaign — cemented its legend.

Chambertin
01

Napoleon Bonaparte reportedly consumed a bottle of Chambertin daily, diluted with water on campaign; his preference is documented in accounts from Constant, his valet, and is credited with popularizing Burgundy in Parisian aristocratic circles.

02

Leroy's Chambertin, from 0.51 ha with biodynamic farming and yields under 15 hl/ha, has traded at $5,000–8,000 per bottle for top vintages (2005, 2010, 2015) — making it the most expensive non-monopole Chambertin by a significant margin.

03

The Chambertin vineyard name first appears in written records in 1219 as 'Campus Bertini' (Bertin's Field) — a reference to a local peasant who allegedly planted vines next to the Clos de Bèze monastery vineyards and matched their quality.

04

Armand Rousseau's 2.15-hectare parcel in Chambertin, combined with his 1.48 ha in Clos de Bèze, makes him the most significant Chambertin landowner among quality-focused producers; his cellar hold across both sites averages 10–12 years before release.

In the Glass

Chambertin is Burgundy's most imposing red: black cherry, plum, and blackberry with a deep, earthy base of game, truffle, and tobacco. The body is the fullest in the Côte de Nuits — broader than Musigny, more structured than Clos de Vougeot — with a tannic architecture that requires 15–25 years to fully resolve. From Rousseau or Leroy, fully mature Chambertin evolves toward leather, incense, and iron — complex, austere, and undeniably grand.
