About Chambertin
Chambertin is a red grand cru near the centre of Gevrey-Chambertin's group of nine grands crus, all with 'Chambertin' in their names. Legend says a man named Bertin planted it in the 12th century to copy the monks' Clos de Bèze next door, and 'Champ de Bertin' became Chambertin. Claude Jobert united it with Clos de Bèze in 1702. It was one of Napoleon's favourite wines. Its 13 or so hectares are split among more than twenty owners, so quality varies. Armand Rousseau is the largest; Trapet, Rossignol-Trapet, Camus, Louis Latour, Jacques Prieur and Leroy also hold vines. At its best the wine is powerful, concentrated and long-lived.
