Nuits-Saint-Georges is Burgundy's most commercially active village, with 7,200+ lots at auction and a broad range of premier crus that attract serious collector interest. Unlike its northern neighbours, NSG has no grands crus; instead it compensates with an exceptional range of 41 premier crus whose quality rivals grands crus elsewhere. The village splits into two communes: Nuits-Saint-Georges itself, with premiers crus including Les Vaucrains, Les Saints-Georges, and Les Cailles on iron-rich, rocky terrain; and Prémeaux-Prissey to the south, home to Clos de la Maréchale. Henri Gouges is the benchmark producer, his Les Saints-Georges and Les Vaucrains commanding $200–400 per bottle. Robert Chevillon's range of premiers crus — eight in total — represents extraordinary value and collector depth. Confuron-Cotetidot, Chicotot, and Leroy (with Aux Boudots and Aux Murgers) round out the top tier. The auction market for NSG reflects both its commercial scale and its role as an accessible entry into Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir — consistently delivering value against the star villages to the north.

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges has 41 classified premier crus — the most of any single Burgundy commune — covering nearly 150 hectares, yet no grands crus, a historical anomaly explained by 19th-century political lobbying.

Henri Gouges's Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saints-Georges, from 60-year-old vines on rocky, iron-rich soils, is among the longest-lived village-level Burgundies, often requiring 15 years to reach its plateau.

The Prémeaux limestone outcrops in the southern part of the commune differ markedly from the red-clay soils near the village, producing structured, mineral-driven premiers crus that contrast with the rounder, plumper northern style.

Maison Leroy's Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Boudots, from biodynamically farmed vines with yields under 18 hl/ha, has traded at auction above $800 per bottle — comparable to many grands crus from conventional producers.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Pinot Noir is robust and earthy — the most savory in the Côte de Nuits. Dark cherry, iron, game, and smoked meat define the character of the iron-rich Les Vaucrains and Les Cailles parcels, while Les Saints-Georges adds floral lift and precision. Tannins are grippy in youth, firming with age before softening into leather, truffle, and forest floor. Approachable from the south end, sterner from the north — consistently built for the cellar.
