Domaine Henri Gouges

Domaine Henri Gouges is the historic champion of Nuits-Saint-Georges, a 14-hectare estate that pioneered domaine-bottling and single-vineyard winemaking in Burgundy. Henri Gouges (1889–1967), who built up the estate after World War I by acquiring multiple parcels at advantageous prices, was among the first vignerons in Burgundy to bottle and market his own wines rather than sell to négociants. Henri was also instrumental in drafting the Appellation Contrôlée regulations, served as Mayor of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and famously argued against Grand Cru status for Les Saint-Georges even though he was one of its major owners. Today the 14-hectare estate is entirely within Nuits-Saint-Georges, with seven Premier Cru parcels including the family monopole Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges, and is led by fourth-generation cousins Grégory and Antoine Gouges. All vines are farmed organically, averaging 50 years of age with some plots approaching 90 years. At auction, top vintages of Les Saint-Georges and Les Vaucrains represent exceptional value compared to Grand Crus from the Côte de Nuits.

Henri Gouges (1889–1967) was among the first Burgundy producers to estate-bottle his own wine and helped draft the Appellation Contrôlée laws in the 1930s — a founding figure of modern French wine regulation.
All 14 hectares are exclusively in Nuits-Saint-Georges, with seven Premier Cru parcels including the family monopole Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges; average vine age exceeds 50 years, with some plots approaching 90.
The estate farms entirely organically, certified without pesticides or herbicides; Grégory and Antoine Gouges represent the fourth generation, continuing a family tradition that has never sold a single parcel.
Henri Gouges famously advocated against Grand Cru classification for Les Saint-Georges in the 1930s, believing Premier Cru was sufficient — a decision that keeps these exceptional wines accessible at auction today.

In the Glass

Gouges wines are the definitive expression of Nuits-Saint-Georges terroir — structured, earthy, and built for the long term, with a characteristic iron-and-tobacco backbone over dark cherry and forest floor. Les Saint-Georges is the most powerful and layered, requiring 10–15 years to open; Les Vaucrains is more compact and mineral; Clos des Porrets is supple with lifted red fruit.
