Mâconnais

Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Mâconnais occupies the southernmost stretch of Burgundy, a broad, hilly landscape that runs from Tournus to the border with Beaujolais. Where the Côte d'Or deals in limestone escarpments and micro-parcels, the Mâconnais offers gently rolling terrain with a warmer climate — Chardonnay here achieves ripeness more reliably than further north, producing wines of approachable generosity rather than austere minerality. The bedrock is similar Jurassic limestone, but the looser geography and larger appellations mean terroir expression is less precise. Pouilly-Fuissé is the crown appellation: in 2020 it became the first Mâconnais appellation to introduce Premier Cru classification, with 22 recognised lieux-dits on the dramatic hillsides around the Solutré and Vergisson rocks — prehistoric landmarks that rise 490 metres above the vines. Producers like Château Fuissé, Domaine Valette, and the negociant house of J.J. Vincent define the quality ceiling. Saint-Véran, Viré-Clessé, and Mâcon-Villages offer excellent value Chardonnay that punches above its price point. At auction, Mâconnais wines rarely headline but consistently attract buyers seeking quality Chardonnay at a fraction of Côte de Beaune prices.

Mâconnais
01

Pouilly-Fuissé received its first Premier Cru classifications in 2020 — 22 individual lieux-dits — the first new Burgundy appellation elevation in decades, immediately lifting auction prices for the top sites.

02

The Roche de Solutré, a dramatic limestone escarpment above the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyards, is a Palaeolithic site where 100,000 horse skeletons were excavated — the vines grow on the same limestone rubble those herds once ran across.

03

The Mâconnais produces around 40% of all Burgundy AOC wine by volume, yet rarely appears at headline auction — making it a consistent source of undervalued Chardonnay for buyers priced out of the Côte de Beaune.

04

Viré-Clessé, elevated to its own AOC in 1999, occupies clay-limestone hillsides that produce a richer, rounder Chardonnay style closer to Meursault than to Chablis — at a fraction of either price.

In the Glass

Mâconnais Chardonnay is riper and more generous than Côte d'Or whites — peach, yellow apple, and mild citrus with a soft mid-palate and less acidic edge. Pouilly-Fuissé from the best Premier Cru sites adds stone fruit concentration, a limestone-driven mineral finish, and the capacity to age 8–12 years in top vintages.
