Domaine Guffens-Heynen

Domaine Guffens-Heynen is the most celebrated small estate in Pouilly-Fuissé, founded by Belgian-born Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine after the couple left Flanders in 1976 to pursue winemaking in the Mâconnais. They acquired their first plots in Pierreclos in 1979, and Jean-Marie made his first vintage in 1982. His winemaking philosophy — which he coined 'non-cultivation' — is one of radical non-intervention: indigenous yeasts, no fining, no filtration, and minimal sulphur. The domaine covers approximately 5 hectares, primarily in Vergisson and Pierreclos, with old-vine Chardonnay reaching over 60 years of age. Jean-Marie also founded the négociant house Verget in 1990, through which he sources grapes from Chablis to the Mâconnais, but the Guffens-Heynen estate bottlings represent his most personal statement. At auction, Guffens-Heynen's top cuvées trade at $150–$350 per bottle, extraordinary prices for Mâconnais Chardonnay, reflecting a cult following among white Burgundy lovers who prize his iconoclastic style.

Jean-Marie Guffens arrived from Flanders in 1976 with no formal winemaking training; within a decade he was producing Pouilly-Fuissé that rivalled Côte de Beaune whites in depth, earning him the nickname 'the master of the Mâconnais'.
His philosophy of 'non-cultivation' — no fertilisers, herbicides, or pesticides, with minimal cellar intervention — was considered eccentric in the 1980s Mâconnais but is now widely recognised as the foundation of serious winemaking anywhere.
In 1990, Jean-Marie founded Verget, a négociant house that sources Chardonnay exclusively from Chablis to the Mâconnais; Verget has since become one of Burgundy's most respected sources of terroir-driven white wine at all price points.
Guffens-Heynen's En Solive vineyard in Vergisson, from 60+ year-old vines on limestone soils, produces Pouilly-Fuissé that consistently earns 92–96-point scores and auctions for prices that outpace many Côte de Beaune Premier Crus.

In the Glass

Guffens-Heynen wines are among the most distinctive Chardonnays on earth — raw in energy, almost savage in their mineral intensity, with a combination of ripe stone fruit, beeswax, and wet limestone that sets them apart from any other Mâconnais producer. En Solive from Vergisson shows the most tension and minerality; Mâcon-Pierreclos is fuller and more generous. Both reward extended aging in a way that confounds expectations for the appellation.
