About Clos de Vougeot
Clos de Vougeot is a walled vineyard in Vougeot and, at 50.6 hectares, the largest grand cru on the Côte de Nuits. The monks of Cîteaux Abbey assembled it from the early 12th century, and the wall was finished by 1336. It was the Cistercians' flagship vineyard. The château inside dates from 1551 and has housed the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin since 1945. After the Revolution, Julien-Jules Ouvrard bought the whole clos in 1818. His heirs sold it in 1889 to six merchants, splitting it for the first time. Further divisions followed, and by the early 2000s it had more than 80 owners.
